History: The Lady of the Lake's origins are probably ancient and pagan, like Morgan le Fay's, and she and Morgan may have ultimately derived from the same tradition.
The Lady of the Lake is an office filled first by the priestess Viviane.
Viviane is the High Priestess of Avalon. She is often misunderstood because her family has little or no contact with her, and that she would do anything to keep Camelot and Avalon, as well as the priestesses of Avalon alive in everyone's heart.
Viviane learns her magic from Merlin, who becomes enamored of her. She refuses to give him her love until he has taught her all his secrets, but when he does, she uses her power to trap him beneath a stone. Because he could see the future, he knew this would happen, but was powerless to avoid it. Other stories and myths show Viviane and Merlin as lovers until his death.
Viviane is the wise and beautiful step-mother and teacher of Lancelot, she is also the elder sister to Morgause & Egraine. The Lady of the Lake first explains the meaning of knighthood to her son, Lancelot, who wishes to become a knight and leave Avalon. She tells him that "A knight should have two hearts, one as hard and impenetrable as diamond, and the other as soft and pliable as hot wax." The hard heart "should oppose those who are treacherous and cruel," the waxen heart shaped by "good and compassionate people [who] should be able to lead the knight to everything which pertains to graciousness and goodness." She also explains to Lancelot the significance and responsibilities of the sword she is about to bestow upon him, telling Lancelot that the sword is "the most honourable and noble of weapons." Though she truly wishes him to stay in Avalon with her. Even sending him up to the circle of stones with Morgan to say his goodbyes to Avalon, in hopes that he would change his mind and remain in Avalon.
In some versions of the Arthur legend, the Lady of the Lake also bestows Excalibur upon Arthur and receives the sword again after Arthur is mortally wounded.
Arthur is lead back to Avalon by his sister, Morgan Le Fay shortly after Viviane’s death at the hands of Mordred, Morgan & Arthur’s son. Mordred stabbed her in retaliation for killing his adopted mother, Morgause.
However, in this storyline, Viviane is alive and well, and still rules over Avalon as the Lady of the Lake. She is the Goddess incarnate, walking the earth and Avalon, teaching the old ways, and weaving the fates of mankind. She will never truly disappear from Avalon, it is as much of her, as she is of the Holy Isle. And there is no better place to keep watch over Excalibur than Avalon, and no better protector of the sword than Viviane.
Character is from (series, book, creator, or author, if it applies): Loosely based off Marion Zimmer Bradley’s The Mists of Avalon
