Character description: Martin Asher is a strange and dangerous man with a peculiar lifestyle… if you could even call it his lifestyle. He didn’t have a very pleasant childhood and his relationship with his mother could be described as “strained”.
He is a serial killer who takes over the lives of his victims – dressing like them, acting like them, doing their jobs, paying their bills. He sees someone whose life he finds interesting, and he steals it until someone gets suspicious, or he gets bored. He has several different aliases and is highly intelligent. He’s very good at reading people, manipulating people, disguising himself, and – when he’s not caught off guard or nervous – lying. He’s very much a chameleon and can take on any personality he wishes, provided he has someone to study to base a persona on.
Not a lot is known about the real Martin Asher. Those he chooses to let in enough to get to know who he really is don’t usually live very long. He’s a man who is very unhappy with who he is, so he tries on other people’s lives. Yet, at the same time, he has a longing to be loved and accepted for who he is. These two conflicting points are the motivation behind his crimes.
List of Aliases:
and many more
Persuasion: He’d call himself neutral, but most people would consider him evil.
Type of Creature: Human

History: Martin Asher and his twin brother, Reese, were born on February 20, 1973 to Helen Asher. Reese was first by four minutes, which doesn’t seem like much of a difference, but it set a trend that would carry through the rest of their lives. Reese always came first. He was Helen’s favorite, and though she would never admit that aloud, it always showed clearly in her actions. This had a devastating affect on Martin, a sensitive and intelligent child always pushed aside.
When Martin and Reese were little boys, there was an incident that occurred while they were playing in a lake. Reese drowned and Martin made it ashore. Helen was devastated and rather than cherishing her remaining son, she pushed him even further away. Her behavior toward him was even borderline abusive. She would tell detectives later that Reese was a good swimmer, and she suspected Martin had been responsible for the accident that claimed Reese's life.
Martin was fifteen when he left home and boarded a bus. It was there that he met the young man who would become his first victim – Matt Soulsby. The two became friends during their bus ride. Martin stayed fairly quiet while Matt shared stories from his childhood, his present, his planned future. Martin listened with fascination. When the bus broke down, Martin and Matt rented a car and began an impromptu road trip. They exchanged more conversation and Matt told more stories. When the car got a flat tire, the boys got out and since Martin had never changed a tire before, Matt grabbed a tire iron and got to work. As a bus came driving down the street, Martin saw a small window of opportunity – a chance at truly escaping his life in a way he hadn’t imagined. It happened in an instant. Martin pushed Matt in front of the bus, and later bashed his head in with a rock and took his belongings – a backpack, and a guitar – leaving his own things in their place.
This was the beginning of a long string of murders he would later commit as he leap-frogged from one life to the next. He’s become very skilled at this, often able to leave his victims unidentifiable by destroying their teeth, hands, and feet. Often, but not always. Though he’s tried to cover his tracks, he has left a bit of a trail.
His last known identity was that of an art dealer from Montreal, Canada named James Costa. A clever FBI Agent, whom he’d become romantically involved with as James Costa, laid a trap for him and stabbed him in the chest with a pair of scissors. He collapsed on the floor, presumably dead, and Agent Illeana Scott went into the other room to call for backup.
When she returned to the room, Asher’s body was gone. He’s been at large ever since.
Character is from (series, book, creator, or author, if it applies): The movie Taking Lives, which was based on the book of the same name (though this character is based on the movie version).
